Fanfic Glossary Exchange

What Does Exchange Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fandom event where participants are assigned each other's requests and create works as gifts, usually anonymously until a reveal date. Sign up, receive an assignment, give a fic, get a fic.

Exchange in Practice

Gift exchanges are fandom's gift economy made literal and formal: participants submit requests and offers, a matching process (AO3 has built-in exchange infrastructure) assigns each person a recipient, and everyone creates to someone else's wishlist by deadline. Works post anonymously to a collection, recipients enjoy a guessing period, and author reveals complete the ritual. The format's grand institution is Yuletide, the long-running rare-fandoms exchange, but hundreds of exchanges run year-round for specific ships, tropes, and seasons. Exchange culture has its own vocabulary — treats (extra unassigned gifts), pinch hits (rescue assignments for dropped matches) — and its own quiet ethics about writing generously to someone else's taste.

Example usage

"My exchange assignment is a ship I have never written, which is terrifying in the specific way that produces my best work."
