Fanfic Glossary Scanlation

What Does Scanlation Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fan-made translation of a comic, produced by scanning (or ripping) the original pages and replacing the text — scan plus translation. Scanlation groups historically made manga accessible to readers outside Japan.

Scanlation in Practice

Scanlation groups are volunteer teams with specialized roles: translators, cleaners who remove original text, typesetters who letter the English, and quality checkers. For decades scanlation was the primary way non-Japanese readers accessed most manga, and it built the international fandoms that official publishers later monetized. The practice occupies the same legal gray zone as all unauthorized translation, and community norms evolved around it — groups historically dropped series when official licenses appeared. Manhwa and manhua fandoms inherited the entire scanlation model, vocabulary included. Many longtime fans trace their fandom literacy directly to a scanlation group's release schedule.

Example usage

"The scanlation group's translation notes were half the reason I understood the cultivation system at all."
