What Does Snippet Mean?
Writing & CraftA short excerpt or fragment of writing shared informally — a paragraph from a WIP, an unpolished scene, a stray bit that may never join a finished fic.
Snippet in Practice
Snippet-sharing is fandom's open-studio culture: writers post fragments to Tumblr or Discord for feedback, hype, or accountability, often under recurring rituals like WIP-sharing games where authors trade excerpts on a theme or post six sentences from a current project. The snippet's lack of obligation is the point — it isn't a published work with a tag and a summary, just proof of life from a story in progress, and audiences treat it accordingly, cheering momentum rather than judging polish. Some snippets eventually appear inside finished fics; others live forever as orphaned fragments in a drafts folder, which every writer agrees is a normal and noble fate.
Example usage
"She posted a four-line snippet from the WIP and the replies have been chanting for the full chapter ever since."
