What Does Tag Set Mean?

Tag Set in Practice
When an exchange or fest runs on AO3, the mods create a tag set establishing the menu — which fandoms, characters, and relationships are in play. Many challenges open with a nomination phase where participants submit tags for inclusion, followed by mod review to wrangle duplicates and rule on eligibility, and arguments over nomination rules are a seasonal exchange tradition. The tag set then powers the signup form: participants request and offer only from within it. The feature is invisible to casual archive users but is core infrastructure for challenge culture, and 'is it in the tag set?' is the first question of every exchange season.
