Without AO3's subscription button, Tumblr writers notify readers manually: fans ask onto the taglist, and each update post ends with a block of tagged usernames summoning them. Maintaining one is genuine labor — lists get long, usernames change, tags silently fail, and writers develop systems of numbered continuation posts when they exceed Tumblr's tagging limits. Taglist culture carries its own courtesies: readers ask politely to be added or removed, and writers honor per-series preferences. The institution demonstrates the same lesson as the masterlist — fic communities will manually reconstruct any missing platform feature out of sheer determination, one tagged username at a time.
