What Does Weeaboo Mean?
Fandom CulturePejorative slang for a non-Japanese person obsessed with Japan and Japanese pop culture to an embarrassing or appropriative degree. Often shortened to 'weeb,' which has softened into semi-affectionate self-description.
Weeaboo in Practice
The word's origin is well documented internet arcana: 4chan moderators set a word filter replacing the earlier insult 'wapanese' with the nonsense word 'weeaboo,' and the replacement promptly took on the original's meaning. Classic weeaboo behavior — peppering speech with misused Japanese, treating Japan as a fantasy land, lecturing actual Japanese people about their culture — made the term a genuine insult through the 2000s. Like many fandom insults it then underwent partial reclamation: 'weeb' is now something anime fans call themselves with a shrug, while the full 'weeaboo' retains more bite. The distinction between loving a culture's media and fetishizing the culture remains the term's serious core.
Example usage
"I'm enough of a weeb to recognize the trope, but I had to look up the actual folklore behind it."
