The format's appeal is low stakes with collective energy; without assignments or matching, nobody owes anyone a gift, but the synchronized flood of content gives small ships and quiet fandoms a festival pulse. Variants are endless — kink fests descended from kink memes, reverse fests where art prompts fic, themed weeks with daily prompts — and fest season is when a ship tag's yearly output can double in seven days.
