Fanfic Glossary Clowning

What Does Clowning Mean?

Fandom Culture

Knowingly indulging in fan theories or hopes that are almost certainly doomed — 'putting on the clown makeup' — and embracing the inevitable foolishness when canon lets you down. Performed with full self-awareness and clown emojis.

Clowning in Practice

Clowning frames hope as costume: fans describe applying the makeup, the wig, and the red nose as they talk themselves into believing the ship will go canon or the dead character will return, then post 'the circus hired me again' when proven wrong. The bit crystallized in late-2010s stan and TV fandom spaces and spread because it solved a real emotional problem — how to keep theorizing passionately while acknowledging the track record. Entire fandoms self-identify as circuses during hiatus speculation seasons. Clowning differs from tinhatting in its self-awareness: the tinhatter believes, while the clown believes and knows better, simultaneously, which is fandom's most honest epistemic state.

Example usage

"The trailer dropped one ambiguous frame and the whole fandom showed up in full clown regalia by lunch."
