Fanfic Glossary Curative vs. Transformative Fandom

What Does Curative vs. Transformative Fandom Mean?

Fandom Culture

A framework dividing fan activity into curative fandom — collecting, cataloguing, and mastering canon facts — and transformative fandom, which remakes canon through fic, art, and shipping. A blunt but durable map of fandom's two temperaments.

Curative vs. Transformative Fandom in Practice

The distinction builds on fan writer obsession_inc's 2009 'affirmational versus transformational' framing and spread in simplified form through mid-2010s fandom discourse. Curative fandom is wiki-editing, lore mastery, and ranking debates; transformative fandom asks what canon could be made to do — fix-its, AUs, ships the text never intended. The framework carries a gender-coded history, with curative spaces skewing male and transformative spaces female and queer, though real fans constantly do both. Its weaknesses are well rehearsed (the binary flattens plenty), but as shorthand for why a subreddit and an AO3 tag for the same canon feel like different planets, it remains hard to beat.

Example usage

"He can recite every ship's tonnage in the franchise and has never once wondered what the captains kiss like — peak curative fandom."
