What Does Acafan Mean?
Fandom CultureA blend of 'academic' and 'fan': a scholar who studies fandom while being a fan themselves. The term comes from fan studies, the academic field that grew up around fan cultures in the 1990s.
Acafan in Practice
Fan studies emerged when scholars — most visibly Henry Jenkins, whose 1992 book Textual Poachers treated fans as creative participants rather than passive consumers — began studying fandom from the inside, and 'acafan' named their double position. The acafan stance is methodological as much as personal: writing about fandom with a participant's fluency while maintaining a scholar's distance, a balance the field has debated for decades. Fandom's own relationship with acafans runs warm to wary, since being studied is flattering right up until your community becomes someone's case study. The OTW's journal Transformative Works and Cultures is the field's most fandom-adjacent venue, peer-reviewed and freely readable.
Example usage
"An acafan presented a conference paper on our kink meme, which the meme discussed anonymously for a week."
