What Does FanLib Mean?

FanLib in Practice
FanLib arrived with investor money, an almost entirely male leadership pitching a hobby practiced largely by women, and terms of service that claimed broad rights over posted fic — and fandom reacted with coordinated fury. The episode crystallized an argument fans had been circling for years: if fanfiction was going to live somewhere at scale, fans should own the platform, set the terms, and take the legal risk knowingly rather than enrich strangers. Within weeks of the FanLib debates, the discussions that became the Organization for Transformative Works were underway, and AO3 followed. FanLib itself shut down in 2008, having accidentally accomplished more for fandom infrastructure than it ever intended.
