Fanfic Glossary F/O (Fictional Other)

What Does F/O (Fictional Other) Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fictional character someone considers their romantic partner — the selfship community's term for the character half of the relationship, abbreviated F/O. The community treats these bonds with sincerity and well-developed etiquette.

F/O (Fictional Other) in Practice

Selfshipping — pairing yourself with a fictional character — has its own thriving subculture, and F/O is its core vocabulary: fans maintain F/O lists, create art and fic of themselves with their F/O, and celebrate anniversaries and holidays with the dedication of any relationship. Community norms are notably gentle and boundary-conscious, including etiquette around 'sharing' an F/O with other selfshippers, which ranges from cheerful to firmly exclusive depending on the person. The practice overlaps with comfort characters and waifu/husbando culture but is more sincere than the latter's meme register. Reader-insert and x-reader fic serve partially overlapping audiences, making the selfship community a quiet but significant force in fic readership.

Example usage

"Her pinned post lists her F/Os with a polite note that the first one isn't shareable, which is standard selfship etiquette."
