What Does Waifu Mean?
Fandom CultureA fictional character someone claims as their beloved, semi-ironically positioned as a spouse — from the Japanese rendering of 'wife.' The male counterpart is husbando.
Waifu in Practice
The term traces to a scene in the manga and anime Azumanga Daioh in which a character refers to 'mai waifu,' which anime fandom adopted and ran with far beyond the joke's original size. Declaring a waifu or husbando ranges from throwaway meme ('new waifu just dropped') to genuine devotion overlapping with selfshipping and fictional-other culture. Fandom developed elaborate mock-serious etiquette around it, including jokes about waifu loyalty and 'waifu wars' between fans of rival characters. The word is deeply embedded in anime and gacha game fandom but circulates everywhere fans pledge allegiance to fictional people, which is to say everywhere.
Example usage
"He's been loyal to the same waifu since 2014, which is the most stable relationship anyone in this server has."
