Fanfic Glossary Fictionkin

What Does Fictionkin Mean?

Fandom Culture

Someone who identifies as, or deeply identifies with, a fictional character — experiencing the connection as part of their identity rather than ordinary fannish attachment. The term grew out of otherkin communities.

Fictionkin in Practice

Fictionkin communities developed their own vocabulary (a 'kintype' is the identified character; 'kinnie' is casual or joking shorthand) and their own norms, including 'doubles' etiquette for encountering others kin with the same character. Experiences within the community vary widely, from spiritual identification to a psychological framework for processing identity, and fans outside it range from respectful to dismissive — 'kin assign me a character' jokes turned the vocabulary into general meme currency, to mixed feelings from sincere fictionkin. In fic and fandom spaces the practical takeaway is courtesy: the term describes a real community with internal diversity, not a punchline. As with most identity vocabulary, usage drift between sincere and joking registers is constant and occasionally contentious.

Example usage

"Half the tag uses 'kinnie' as a joke, which the actual fictionkin community has complicated feelings about."
