Flounce in Practice
The flounce is distinguished from simply leaving by its theatricality: a goodbye post detailing the community's failures, the deletion of years of work as punctuation, sometimes a follow-up to address the responses to the first goodbye. Journal fandom named and catalogued the form, and fandom wank communities treated spectacular flounces as prime entertainment. The unwritten rules are well known: a true flounce forfeits the right to return with dignity, deleting your fic on the way out is the nuclear option, and announcing that you're 'just lurking now' resets the clock. For all the mockery, the flounce persists because fandoms are intense and people burn out — sometimes loudly.
