Fanfic Glossary Dead Fic

What Does Dead Fic Mean?

Fandom Culture

A work in progress that will never update again — abandoned in fact, whether or not the author ever said so. Pronounced dead by readers after enough years of silence.

Dead Fic in Practice

Dead fic is the blunt diagnosis where 'abandoned' is the polite one, and fandom has rituals around it: checking an author's profile for signs of life, scanning comment sections where readers hold candlelight vigils, and the bittersweet genre of comments that read 'I know this is dead, but thank you for what exists.' Causes are mundane — authors leave fandoms, lose interest, or simply grow up and away — and veteran readers carry lists of magnificent corpses, fics whose unfinished brilliance haunts them years later. Some authors euthanize officially, posting outline-style summaries of the planned ending, an act fandom receives with genuine gratitude.

Example usage

"Pouring one out for the greatest dead fic in the fandom, last updated eleven years ago at the worst possible moment."
