Fanfic Glossary Fujoshi

What Does Fujoshi Mean?

Fandom Culture

Japanese slang for a female fan of BL and male/male romance content; literally 'rotten girl,' a self-deprecating pun that fans reclaimed as an identity label. The male equivalent is fudanshi.

Fujoshi in Practice

The term arose in 2000s Japanese internet culture as an insult playing on a homophone for 'respectable woman,' and BL fans promptly adopted it for themselves, wearing 'rotten' as a badge. In Japanese fandom it remains common self-identification, with an entire commercial ecosystem of fujoshi-targeted media. International usage is more contested: some English-speaking fans self-describe as fujoshi cheerfully, while others use the word pejoratively for fans they consider to objectify m/m relationships, which makes tone and context matter a great deal. The discourse around the term is itself a long-running fixture of BL fandom spaces.

Example usage

"Her bio just says 'fujoshi, 20 years rotten and proud,' which is honestly a complete personality description."
