Fanfic Glossary Dear Author Letter

What Does Dear Author Letter Mean?

Fandom Culture

A public letter an exchange participant writes to their as-yet-unknown assigned creator, detailing likes, dislikes, prompts, and do-not-wants. 'Dear Yuletide Writer' letters are the form's most famous lineage.

Dear Author Letter in Practice

Since exchange assignments are anonymous until reveals, the letter is how a recipient talks to their unknown writer: here are my favorite dynamics, here are tropes I adore, here is my DNW (do-not-want) list of things that would ruin the gift. Letters range from three lines to multi-thousand-word documents with per-fandom prompt sections, and writing a good one is a recognized skill — specific enough to inspire, open enough not to dictate. The custom began in early exchanges and Yuletide made it canonical; many participants keep a permanent letter post updated across years of challenges. Treaters browse letters too, which is how an especially charming letter ends up generating extra gifts.

Example usage

"Her letter is famous: organized prompts, a clear DNW list, and one unhinged paragraph per ship that makes everyone want to write it."
