Treat in Practice
Exchanges match each participant with one assigned creator, but most also allow treats: anyone can browse the requests and write additional gifts for whichever prompts delight them. Treats range from full-length fic to short pieces, and some exchanges (Yuletide most famously, through its 'Madness' collection for short works) institutionalize the practice with dedicated sub-collections. Treating is prestige generosity — receiving multiple gifts marks a prompt as beloved, and prolific treaters are quietly cherished community figures. The custom transforms exchanges from a closed circuit of obligations into something looser and warmer, where extra fic appears simply because someone's request was too good to leave alone.
