Secret Santa in Practice
Fandom adapted the office Secret Santa into one of its most beloved annual rituals: sign up with a list of ships, tropes, and dislikes; receive a stranger's wishlist; and spend December secretly crafting fic or art tailored to their tastes. The anonymity is half the fun — recipients try to guess their gifter from writing style, and the reveal is a small holiday in itself. The format runs on standard exchange infrastructure (mods, deadlines, pinch hitters for dropouts), and AO3's gift and collection features handle anonymous posting elegantly, keeping creators hidden until the collection un-anonymizes. Countless fandoms run their own; the giant multifandom Yuletide occupies the same season.
