Fanfic Glossary Gift Fic

What Does Gift Fic Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fic written for a specific person — an exchange recipient, a friend's birthday, or a spontaneous tribute — and formally dedicated to them. AO3 marks gifts with 'for [user]' on the work.

Gift Fic in Practice

Gift fic is fandom's gift economy in its most literal form, and AO3 built the social mechanics directly into the platform: authors can gift any work to another user, the dedication displays under the title, and the recipient gets notified and can accept or refuse. Exchanges and Yuletide institutionalize gifting at scale, but the spontaneous gift — a friend's favorite rarepair written for their terrible week — remains one of the culture's purest gestures, fic as a letter addressed to one reader that everyone else is allowed to read. Conventions surround the practice: tailoring the work to the recipient's known tastes is the craft, and 'treats,' the unassigned extras of exchange culture, extend the gifting impulse past obligation. The dedication line doubles as fandom's public record of friendships.

Example usage

"She wrote me 8k of my comfort ship for my birthday, gifted on AO3, and I have never recovered."
