Fanfic Glossary WIP Wednesday

What Does WIP Wednesday Mean?

Fandom Culture

A recurring weekly tradition of sharing a snippet from your work-in-progress on Wednesdays, tagged for the occasion. One of several alliterative sharing rituals, alongside Six Sentence Sunday and its cousins.

WIP Wednesday in Practice

WIP Wednesday and its relatives give fic writers a low-stakes ritual for showing unfinished work: post a few paragraphs from whatever is in the drafts folder, tag it, and enjoy a little encouragement midweek. The format spread across Tumblr and later platforms because it solves several problems at once — accountability for slow projects, content between chapter updates, and a socially sanctioned excuse to talk about the WIP consuming your life. Variants abound, including Six Sentence Sunday (six sentences, Sundays) and tag games where writers nominate each other to share. The tradition's gentle rule is that nobody is owed polish; a WIP Wednesday snippet may contain placeholder text and bracketed notes, which is half the charm.

Example usage

"My WIP Wednesday post was three paragraphs and the phrase '[FIGHT SCENE GOES HERE, GOOD LUCK FUTURE ME].'"
