Fanfic Glossary Reveals

What Does Reveals Mean?

Fandom Culture

The moment an exchange or fest drops anonymity and shows who created what. Works post anonymously first; at reveals, bylines appear and creators can finally claim, discuss, and crosspost their pieces.

Reveals in Practice

Anonymous posting is standard exchange practice — works go live with authors hidden so gifts are judged on their own terms and guessing games can flourish — and reveals is the scheduled end of the masquerade. The interval between posting and reveals has its own culture: readers speculate about authorship, writers studiously avoid commenting in recognizable voices, and 'guess which fic was mine' is a beloved post-reveals genre. After reveals, creators add works to their public catalogs, respond to comments as themselves, and post the traditional author's notes about what nearly went wrong. Some events also run creator reveals separately from work reveals, stretching the ritual across days.

Example usage

"I guessed her fic before reveals because nobody else in this fandom uses em dashes like a weapon."
